When an Old Girl Gets an Itchy Butt

Sometimes a girl gets an itch. We’ve had her anal glands drained and she still does this. Is this normal? She could have a food allergy or intolerance so we put her on a chicken free blue buffalo diet. We’ve heard that some Goldens with food sensitivities present with anal gland problems first.

I’m also looking at a product called Firm Up that contains pumpkin and apple pectin. It’s dehydrated and you just add some water and put in in their food. Is anybody using this?

Sadie On the Beach

Most public beaches in the Myrtle Beach area are pet-friendly during early morning hours or during late evenings year-round. However, pets are not allowed on the beaches or Ocean Boulevard between 21st Avenue North to 13th Avenue South of Myrtle Beach at any time. Pets are also not allowed to be walked on any public beach in Myrtle Beach between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm from May 1st through Labor Day.

Going on a Car Ride

Many dogs become anxious even before the engine starts, so it’s important to break the car ride down piece by piece. Start by loading your dog in the car and giving him a tasty treat for getting into his special area — then let him out immediately. Once he’s comfortable getting in the car, start the engine while your dog is near the car (but not inside it). Reward your dog and then turn the engine off. Next, have your dog get into the car and start the engine, but don’t move out of park; while your dog is in the car, give him a reward.

When your dog is comfortable in the car, pull out of the garage, but immediately return. If your dog remains calm with this short drive, try a trip around the block. Pair each trip with a reward to alleviate your dog’s anxiety and create a positive association with the car.If your dog suffers from motion sickness in the car, consider replacing food treats with praise as a reward.Crating your dog may also be an option.

Having Lunch at Rehoboth Beach

Do Golden Retrievers Like Going to the Beach?

I'd say "of course they do", but some Golden Retrievers are actually not so fond of it. Believe it or not, some Goldens don't like swimming or getting wet at all, and some find it too hot on the sand because their paws get burned. Lighter Goldens with pale skin can get sunburned, others hate being splashed by waves... As a good dog owner you should think about how to make beach time fun for both of you. Different dogs have different needs, just like people. And dogs who don't swim aren't necessarily dogs who'll never swim.

Have fun!

The waitress gave Sadie a slice of pizza.
